Stick With What You Know

Our real successes will come from things that we know how to do and things that we know a lot about.

A week ago, I was at a conference where a speaker was sharing his thoughts on a topic that I am pretty sure he had no idea about. About half way through his speech, I thought, if I run up on stage and take over will people give me a standing ovation? :) It was bad, but I also am great at exaggerating.

We need to do, the things that we know how to do. I remember this story about a guy who really loved to bet on sporting events, so he called his bookie and asks, "How many football games are playing this week?", his bookie replies, "Eleven." The guy then bets on every game. The next day the bookie calls the guy and says, "Sorry you lost every game!" The guy then says, "How many basketball games are being played?" his bookie replies, "twelve." The guy then bets on every game. The next day the bookie calls the guy and says, "Sorry you lost every basketball game too! Maybe you should try betting on soccer." The guy thinks about and says, "What do I know about soccer!"

Every time I think about this story, I have to laugh to myself. There are some things that we are just not good at, even though we think that we are. Over time, our real successes will come from things that we know how to do and things that we know a lot about. When setting goals for yourself, remember to stick with what you know, unless the new goal is to learn something new, in which case you can branch out, try new things and not try and pretend that we are experts (Until we are).
